Story 1951 Captain Shaw a Tanker skipper sent an SOS radio message received at Cambeltwon Argyllshire. Stating that his vessel, The Mactra was lying 180 miles west of Ireland in raging gale with her steering gear damaged. The tanker was reported to be in no immediate danger. th tug Turmoil was sent to assist the Mactra.

Captain Shaw at sea since 1927 experienced many exciting actions during the war and was aboard the Standella when it was Torpedoed off Cuba in 1942. U Boat U-598 14 aug 1942 fired two spreads of two torpedoes at the Convey TAW-12 Northwest of Barlovento Point Cuba. One Torpedo of the second spread damaged the Standella. On 2 June 1943 the Standella again saw action when it was hit by two torpedoes from u-126 off Freetown and escaped because a destroyer chased away the U-boat with artillery and depth charges.
