StoryMr Bertram Young a retired Ship's Captain died suddenly in 1938 as he was sitting down to dinner with his two brothers Charles Devan Young 56 a retired ship's Officer and William Stewart Young. He was 54 and like his brothers he was a bachelor. He retired from the sea in 1925. He was educated at Kirton Grammer School, Lincolnshire and later attended Swainston's Nautical School Sunderland where he gained his certificate.
He was known throughout the country in shipping circles, he served with the Anchor Line for several years, and and also with James Westoll & Company Ltd of Sunderland. During his career at sea he travelled round the world several times. With his brothers he moved to East Boldon in 1923. Mr Young was a member of the Master Mariners Association and the London Liver Club and some years before was made a Freeman of the City of London.
